Constanze Guthenke, Associate Professor of Greek Literature at Oxford University and E.P. Warren Praelector at Corpus Christi College, will present the twenty-third Helen North Memorial Lecture.

Helen Magill (1853-1944), a member of Swarthmore's first graduating class in 1873, was the first woman to receive a PhD at a U.S. institution, the co-educational Boston University in 1877. Her trajectory opens up critical questions about the imagination of what a professional classicist could be; about the triangulated relationship between America, Europe, and the ancient world; and about the highly ambivalent attitude towards specialist research.
